Paresh Ganatra: Played Shilpa Shinde’s husband earlier, now playing her father in 'Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan'

From playing actor Shilpa Shinde’s husband in the show ‘Chidiyaghar’ to now playing her father in India’s first live comedy show Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan, actor Paresh Ganatra is happy to be associating with the former again. Paresh says that he has always been a fan of Shilpa’s acting and is thrilled to act with her again. “I have worked with Shilpa Shinde earlier in Chidiyaghar, she was playing my wife for almost one and a half years. Now, I am playing her father. I share a great tuning with her because we understand each other very well and we know each other's strengths and weaknesses. We played husband-wife in 2012 and almost after 6 years we are playing father-daughter, so I have grown but she has not!” he says.

In fact, he is playing multiple characters in the show. “I am playing many characters. I play Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Piyush Chawla, Shilpa's Father, a pizza boy and somebody's aunt. So, these are the different characters I am playing and I am loving it. The show has a unique concept of comedy blended with cricket, where both subjects are entertaining. I am just loving it and I told Preeti Simoes (producer) and Neeti Simoes (co-producer) that please use me as much as you can,” he says.

Not only Shilpa, Paresh enjoys working with actor Sunil Grover too, who is also part of the show. “Sunil Grover is a fantastic co-actor to work with. He is a terrific guy and is excellent in his work. I see very few artists who get into the skin of every character like the way he does. He is portraying Kapil Dev's character with so much finesse. If you see somebody who is such a strong artist, you can't stop yourself from admiring and appreciating him. Also, I have seen that he is someone who won't try to take away the limelight from you. Like if I have a punch line which will create laughter, he won't try to act over smart and try to spoil my joke. As an artist, you should give space to your co-artists and Sunil always does that. Also, he is very hard working. As a comedian, you have to maintain the quality of comedy and the only thing you require is consistency and perseverance. This kind of sincerity I haven't seen in other artists,” he says.

Being part of a live show can be challenging, says Paresh. “I always prepare myself and then act because I don't like to look at the prompter as that might make me lose my expressions. So, it's a challenge because you cannot correct yourself in a live show. So, I think everybody should learn their lines properly and then go on stage,” he says.

It is his passion for cricket which motivated Paresh to be part of the show. “I have grown up playing cricket. I used to play it all the time when I was in school and college. This was one of the reasons why I wanted to be part of the show,” he says.

Ask him who his favourite cricketers are, and he says, “My favourite cricketer changes but my constant favourites have been Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar. They are my favourite because Sunil Gavaskar was a player who never wore a helmet, Kapil Dev never missed a match and bowled accurately throughout his career. I guess both the cricketers were consistent. Then came ‘The God of Cricket’, Sachin Tendulkar. I think nobody can beat him. I grew with Tendulkar because we are almost the same age and whenever I thought that I could have been a cricketer, it was just because of Sachin Tendulkar. The other great things of Sachin Tendulkar’s career are that he was never involved in any controversies, he never feared any bowler. When he had first visited Pakistan, he had a ball hit his nose and his nose was bleeding but still, he played.”

Paresh is really enjoying working with Preeti and Neeti Simoes as well. “I know them since 2010 and it has been almost eight years now. We share a great rapport since we have did ‘Comedy Circus’. Then we did ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’, and that was a great experience. The things I like about Preeti are that she is not satisfied with small things. ‘Chalta Hai’ are words that are not part of her dictionary. I also love her energy. And talking about Neeti, when she comes and talks about the economics of the show, she is excellent. She is a great producer. Besides that, they are lovely people and I have loved working with them,” he says.
